Dwayne Johnson’s The Smashing Machine Will Be The Rock’s Lowest Box Office Opening in Years
The Smashing Machine is getting major buzz at potentially earning Dwayne Johnson an Academy Award nomination, but its early box office returns point to being Johnson’s lowest earning film in a long time.
What is The Smashing Machine’s box office opening?
The Smashing Machine, which opened in previews on Thursday, earned $850,000 from both previews and IMAX screenings. According to a report from Deadline, the Dwayne Johnson-led film is eyeing somewhere in between $9-$12 million in its box office opening.
Should the figure hold, it would mark a big low in Johnson’s career as a box office earner. Although the film does star high-profile names like Johnson and Emily Blunt, The Smashing Machine is not a film that was considered to be a huge box office draw. Benny Safdie’s last film, the 2019 hit Uncut Gems, only garnered $50 million at the box office, for example.
Despite the low figures at the box office, The Smashing Machine has been earning big praise. Johnson’s performance, specifically, has drew some rave reviews, with many believing he could be in line for potential award nominations later this year.
The Smashing Machine is written and directed by Benny Safdie. The ensemble cast also includes Emily Blunt as Dawn Staples, Lyndsey Gavin as Elizabeth Coleman, Oleksandr Usyk as Igor Vovchanchyn, Ryan Bader as Mark Coleman, Satoshi Ishii as Enson Inoue, James Moontasri as Akira Shoji, Yoko Hamamura as Kazuyuki Fujita, and more. In addition to leading the cast, Johnson is also producing alongside Eli Bush, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, David Koplan, and Safdie, with Tracey Landon serving as an executive producer.
This marks Johnson and Blunt’s second collaboration, after previously starring together in Disney’s 2021 adventure movie Jungle Cruise. Besides the Benny Safdie-directed movie, they will once again reunite for a Martin Scorsese movie about a real-life mob boss, who was the leader of the largest organized crime syndicate on the Hawaiian Islands.
