Glen Powell-Led Captain Planet Reboot Gets Disappointing Update

Glen Powell recently offered an update on the long-discussed Captain Planet project, addressing questions about his involvement. He confirmed that the reboot is no longer in his hands, with its future direction left unclear.

In an interview with Screen Rant while promoting his Hulu series Chad Powers, Powell revealed, “That one’s no longer in my hands. Yeah, they’re going to take it and run with it, but yeah, I wish them the best on that one.” He explained that although he had been “passionate” about the project since childhood, rights issues and multiple stakeholders complicated its development.

Powell first became attached to a potential Captain Planet movie in 2016. The project was based on the 1990s cartoon about a superhero who fought against polluters and environmental destruction. Powell had stated in 2023 that he still wanted to see the film through. The adaptation also had Leonardo DiCaprio attached as a producer.

In early 2025, Netflix announced it was developing a live-action Captain Planet series with DiCaprio serving as producer. When asked by about the future of his script, Powell reiterated, “I’ve been a passionate fan of Captain Planet since I was a kid. Obviously, some things that you make in this town find their way quickly, and some of ’em don’t, and there was a lot of rights holders and things like that around it. A lot of opinions, so I’m no longer the guy running with the baton.”

Powell emphasized that while he is no longer steering the reboot, the franchise will still continue in another form. His remarks appear to indicate that the television version is moving forward while his film adaptation is not. DiCaprio’s involvement with both the shelved movie concept and the in-development series indicates that Captain Planet remains active in Hollywood.

At present, the likelihood of Powell appearing in or writing for future versions of the property appears minimal.
