Vincent D’Onofrio explains his desire to play DC’s Swamp Thing

Daredevil star Vincent D’Onofrio has revealed why he wants to play the role of the popular DC character Swamp Thing.

Recently, while speaking at a superhero event in Los Angeles. D’Onofrio said, “I’ve always been attracted to people that are broken, and he’s like broken. He’s not only heartbroken, but his whole life is broken into a million pieces. And it’s like the Hunchback of Notre Dame. He’s not attractive, he lives in a swamp, it’s tough, you know? And he’s in love, and that’s an incredible thing.” He also went on to praise the story of Swamp Thing, adding that he considers it “so emotional, and at times so touching.” (via ComicBookMovie.com)

The actor recently reprised his role as Kingpin in Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again, which has been renewed for Season 3 by the studio. However, it’s unclear whether D’Onofrio’s commitments to the role would get in the way of the actor taking on the role of Swamp Thing. DC co-CEO James Gunn shared in an interview in July 2025 that Mangold had not yet given him the script for the Swamp Thing movie. The film is being described as a standalone project and will be a part of the first DCU chapter. Moreover, there is currently no release date window attached to the Swamp Thing movie.
