Errol Flynn 6-Film Collection Blu-ray Review: Great Look at Controversial Actor
Errol Flynn was best known for playing romantic swashbucklers in films during the Golden Age of Hollywood, and his charisma extended beyond the silver screen, as he was a well-known womanizer. A 1942 rape trial brought by two 17-year-old girls, in which he was ultimately acquitted, saw his on-screen image take further hits. However, there’s no denying that Flynn was a great actor as the new Errol Flynn 6-Film Collection Blu-ray shows.
“Warner Bros.’ man of action and romance stars in 6 classic favorites, including swashbuckling adventures The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Sea Hawk, and Adventures of Don Juan, as well as tales of action and war: Santa Fe Trail, Edge of Darkness, and Objective, Burma,” says the official synopsis.
The Errol Flynn 6-Film Collection Blu-ray can be split into two halves: the first of which are three swashbuckling adventure movies. His most iconic role is included, which is 1938’s The Adventures of Robin Hood. Sadly, this is also the weakest disc from a quality standpoint in the collection, as it is the old 2008 Blu-ray disc with dated Dolby Digital audio and a VC-1 codec. It still looks solid, though, and the transfers for 1940’s The Sea Hawk and 1948’s Adventures of Don Juan look even better. These are all great showcases for Flynn, who was effortlessly charming and able to play a cool hero with ease.
The other three movies show Flynn’s more serious side. 1940’s Santa Fe Trail is a “historical” drama about abolitionist John Brown, which hasn’t aged well at all and is full of inaccuracies. Meanwhile, 1943’s Edge of Darkness and 1945’s Objective, Burma are solid World War II movies and are interesting from a historical standpoint, having been made as the war was ongoing. While the swashbuckling movies are the high point of the collection, these aren’t to be dismissed.
The Adventures of Robin Hood has the most bonus features, ranging from a commentary track by historian Rudy Behlmer to several documentaries and featurettes. Other films aren’t as detailed (Santa Fe Trail only has its trailer), but there are some Looney Tunes shorts, some interesting featurettes, and Adventures of Don Juan even has a commentary track with director Vincent Sherman (who passed away in 2006).
