DC’s Red Hood Writer Stands Firm on Charlie Kirk Comments, Despite Firing
After DC fired transgender writer Gretchen Felker-Martin and canceled her Red Hood comic series due to her hateful comments regarding the recent death of controversial conservative activist Charlie Kirk, the writer has issued a response to the same. In a recent interview, the veteran horror author opened up about her sudden termination from DC, while also acknowledging that she was expecting backlash from her employers due to her recent statements.
Gretchen Felker-Martin’s reaction to DC firing and Red Hood cancellation
During a recent conversation, the Red Hood writer remarked that she does not regret calling out Charlie Kirk following his death, despite DC firing her due to the incident.
“I had no regrets for what I said about [Charlie Kirk],” Gretchen Felker-Martin noted while talking to The Comics Journal. “[Kirk’s murder] just didn’t strike me as an especially hot flashpoint. This is such a loathsome person. Everyone on the entire internet is talking about how pleasant it is that he got his.”
Felker-Martin added, “I saw that he had died in the middle of spreading more of the bigotry that he spent his every waking moment promulgating, and in a way that he had advocated for others to die, and felt nothing but contempt for his life.”
Referring to the claims that Kirk endorsed violence against homosexual people, the Manhunt author said, “I mean, this is a man who I’ve watched for years go on television and on enormous stages and convention halls and say that me and everyone like me should be stoned to death.”
The writer, whose Red Hood series could only release one edition before its cancellation, also confirmed that she had received a call from DC Editor-in-Chief Marie Javins, who condemned her actions sometime before the publication fired her.
Nevertheless, Gretchen Felker-Martin maintained her stance about the slain right-wing media personality. She stated that she told Javins, “I said that I’ve listened to Charlie Kirk being an overt Nazi for years of my life, and I had no regrets for what I said about him.”
