The first reactions for One Battle After Another are universally positive, with many critics calling it one of the year’s best movies. Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the thriller stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Bob Ferguson, an ex-revolutionary who must find his daughter after a former enemy resurfaces from his past.

ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim wrote that One Battle After Another is a “PTA hit” and praised DiCaprio’s performance. “It meanders a bit for the first two acts, but the last 45 minutes are among PTA’s best,” Sim wrote on X.
Indiewire’s David Ehrlich wrote, “One Battle After Another might be the best movie released by a major American studio since I started working as a critic (~2010).”
The New York Times’ Kyle Buchanan believes One Battle After Another could deliver Anderson his first Oscar. “The fall fests didn’t move the Oscar needle much, but One Battle After Another certainly will,” Buchanan wrote on X. “Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest could be nominated across the board (Sean Penn & Teyana Taylor are standouts) and finally nab PTA the top Oscar. Besides DiCaprio, One Battle After Another stars Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti.
Anderson produces alongside Adam Somner and Sara Murphy. One Battle After Another is dedicated to Somner, who died in November 2024.
One Battle After Another hails from Warner Bros., which will look to continue its impressive run at the box office. Seven consecutive Warner Bros. movies have opened above $40 million, the latest being The Conjuring: Last Rites.
One Battle After Another will look to continue the streak when it opens in theaters on September 26, 2025.
