X-Men & X2 Director Makes Hollywood Comeback With Another Controversial Film
Having gained worldwide acclaim for helming the first two X-Men movies as well as 2006’s Superman Returns, Bryan Singer is finally making a return to Hollywood as a director after a hiatus of eight years. Singer last made a film in 2017 before a barrage of controversies ended up derailing his prolonged career.
Bryan Singer returns as director for new period drama set in Israel
According to Variety, Bryan Singer is all set to return to the director’s chair with a period project that takes place in Israel and features Oscar-winner Jon Voight in a mystery role.
While plot details regarding Singer’s upcoming film remain under wraps, it supposedly revolves around the dynamics of a father-son duo. A source who has reportedly witnessed the final cut of the movie described it as “a really well-made film with awards-season potential.”
Set in the Middle East in the late 1970s or early 1980s, the flick takes place at a time when Israel had occupied Lebanon. The insider also warned that “it’s going to be a huge hotbed of controversy,” as “it makes Israel look really bad and could be polarizing.”
Meanwhile, another source noted that the plot of Bryan Singer’s comeback movie centers around an architect who sets out on a journey to find redemption. Singer reportedly shot the film in secret in Greece two years ago, with Israeli filmmaker Yariv Horowitz assisting him in an undisclosed capacity.
The Superman Returns director’s last notable work in Hollywood came in the critically acclaimed Bohemian Rhapsody. While he was able to retain directorial credits following the film’s release, he was unceremoniously ousted from production in 2017, with Dexter Fletcher taking his place at the last moment.
Fox cited behavioral issues on Singer’s part as the reason behind their decision to fire him. Additionally, Singer has also been subject to numerous sexual assault allegations over the years, with the director denying all accusations.
The release date, cast, and even the title of the movie continue to remain under wraps at the time of this writing.
