Nina Dobrev, former Superman Tyler Hoechlin, and Virginia Gardner have joined the cast of It Happened One Summer. The romantic comedy is now in pre-production (via Deadline).
The film adapts Tessa Bailey’s 2021 novel, which became a bestseller. It also drew more than 235 million views on BookTok. Peter Hutchings, known for The Hating Game, will direct. Christina Mengert and Joseph Muszynski wrote the screenplay.
Claude Dal Farra and Brian Keady of BCDF Pictures are producing, with Bailey, Lisa Berger, and Samantha Martin from Frolic Media serving as executive producers. Embankment will handle worldwide sales.
The story follows Piper Bellinger, a glamorous Los Angeles socialite whose life unravels after a viral mishap. Her wealthy family cuts her off, and she moves to a small fishing town. She must renovate her late father’s dive bar or lose everything. In Westport, she clashes with Brendan, a rugged sea captain who shows no patience for influencers. Bailey said she based Piper on Alexis Rose from Schitt’s Creek.
Producer Claude Dal Farra stated, “This book has sold all over the world and became a BookTok staple with 235 million hashtag views, remaining a bestseller thanks to its sharp wit and emotional depth.” Bailey added, “Hello Dream cast. I couldn’t be more thrilled to have this talented team behind the project and look forward to the magic they’ll make.”
Dobrev recently wrapped Bear Country with Russell Crowe. Hoechlin concluded four seasons as Superman in Superman & Lois. Gardner completed the lead role in the romantic comedy feature F*ck Valentine’s Day. The film continues the trend of adapting contemporary romance novels for the screen.
