New Rocky Actor Found for Biopic on Sylvester Stallone Boxing Movie

Amazon MGM has officially found a star to play Sylvester Stallone in an upcoming biopic about the making of the legendary boxing classic Rocky.

According to a new report from THR, Anthony Ippolito, who played Al Pacino in the Paramount limited series The Offer, will play Stallone in the upcoming drama I Play Rocky. The movie will be directed by Peter Farrelly, and will chronicle Stallone’s determination to write and star in Rocky, a movie that would kickstart one of the most famous franchises in movie history.

THR’s report notes that Ippolito’s determination was similar to that of Stallone. According to the report, Ippolito made an unsolicited audition tape for the producers after hearing about the movie. This led to the producers giving him a chance, and Ippolito evidently did enough to secure his spot in the movie.

What do we know about the Rocky biopic?

Tomy Emmerich and Christian Baha are set to produce the movie, which comes from a screenplay by Peter Gamble. Farrelly is best known for directing the hit comedy films Dumb and Dumber, Shallow Hal, Me, Myself and Irene, and There’s Something About Mary. He also directed the Oscar winning comedy-drama Green Book in 2018.

“A struggling actor with a partially paralyzed face and a speech impediment writes a script that a big movie studio wants to buy, but he refuses to sell it unless he gets to play the lead,” the description of the movie reads. “Turning down an offer of life-changing money, he instead works for pennies to get the movie made with himself in the starring role. The movie becomes the biggest box office hit of 1976, notching 10 Oscar nominations and winning Best Picture. The true story of the making of the iconic movie Rocky.”
