Thunderbolts* Actor Supports Bucky’s Shocking Romance in MCU

Thunderbolts* star Geraldine Viswanathan recently shared her views on MCU fans rooting for a possible romance between her character, Mel, and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes. Viswanathan joined the cast of the Marvel Studios movie in January 2024 after Ayo Edebiri’s exit from the project. Thunderbolts* featuring Stan, Viswanathan, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Lewis Pullman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Wyatt Russell, among many others, was released in theaters on May 2, 2025, and is now available to stream on Disney+.

Geraldine Viswanathan says fans are ‘shipping’ Bucky and Mel after Thunderbolts*

Geraldine Viswanathan recently sat down for an exclusive chat with ComingSoon in which she shared her thoughts on fans demanding a Mel and Bucky romance arc. Her character, Mel, is an assistant to Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in the movie. In the comics, Mel is also known as the supervillain-turned-superhero Songbird.

She was asked about the scenes her character, Mel, had with Sebastian Stan’s Bucky and how they had a romantic feel to them. When ComingSoon’s Tyler Treese mentioned that fans are already shipping Mel and Bucky, Viswanathan stated the dynamic between Mel and the Winter Soldier was “cool.”

Viswanathan said, “People are shipping it. Yeah, it’s cool to get to see Mel in that in a dynamic where that’s not with her boss. I think those scenes were really fun to do because they do have this kind of back and forth. I mean, Sebastian is such a legendary actor and is such an incredible veteran of the MCU, so I really, yeah, relish getting to do those scenes with him, and I love that the fans have run off with that go forth because yeah, it’s a fun one.”

Bucky and Mel’s interactions in the movie became quite popular on the internet. These led to fans making edits of the two and also rooting for Marvel to bring the characters together in the MCU.
