Batman: Former Superman Actor Wants Coveted DCU Role

A former Superman actor is looking to trade in the Man of Steel’s red trunks for Batman‘s cape and cowl.

What Superman actor wants to play DCU Batman?

At this year’s Fan Expo Canada, former Man of Steel performers Brandon Routh (Superman Returns), Tom Welling (Smallville), Tyler Hoechlin (Supergirl, Superman & Lois), Tim Daly (Superman: The Animated Series), and George Newbern (Justice League) united for a panel hosted by ScreenRant’s Joe Deckelmeier. It was during this panel that Hoechlin, who had been asked to comment on whether Robert Pattinson’s Batman would work in James Gunn’s DC Universe, revealed that he wanted to take a crack at playing the iconic Caped Crusader.

“Well, selfishly, I’m going to say no because I still want to play Batman,” Hoechlin stated. “I think and I say that Rob did a fantastic, fantastic job and [with] Matt Reeves it was great. So I’m happy to let them keep doing their thing, and maybe leave the door open for maybe an additional whole new envisioning of Batman versus Superman.”

Hoechlin first appeared as Clark Kent/Superman in multiple episodes of Supergirl Season 2 before returning for multiple Arrowverse crossover events. He then headlined the spinoff, Superman & Lois, which aired for four seasons on The CW from 2021 to 2024.

As for Batman, James Gunn has repeatedly stated that no actor will be cast to play the DCU’s Dark Knight until the screenplay for The Brave and the Bold is finished. In the meantime, DC Studios is gearing up to begin production on The Batman Part II, which will feature Pattinson as the titular Gotham City-based vigilante. While some fans have expressed interest in seeing Pattinson also play the DCU’s Batman, Gunn has indicated that it is very unlikely and that a new actor will be chosen for the role.

The Brave and the Bold remains undated at this time, while The Batman Part II is scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.
