Eternals’ Kumail Nanjiani Reveals Nixed MCU Plans
Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani has revealed how many MCU movies he was contracted to make.
Nanjiani starred as Kingo in Eternals, the Marvel Studios movie that was released in 2021. Directed by Chloé Zhao, the cast of the film further includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Kit Harrington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, and Don Lee as Gilgamesh.
What did Eternals’ Kumail Nanjiani say about his MCU contract?
Speaking with Mike Birbiglia on the Working It Out podcast, Nanjiani said that, when he originally signed on to star as Kingo in the MCU, he thought he’d be playing the role for at least the next ten years.
“I signed on for six movies,” he said. “I signed on for a video game. I signed on for a theme park ride. They make you sign up for all this stuff. So you’re like, ‘Oh, this is the next ten years of my life, so I’ll be doing Marvel movies every year and, then, in-between I’ll do my own little things, whatever I want to do.’ And then none of that happened.”
Eternals was not a box office smash for Marvel, as the movie only grossed around $402.1 million worldwide. While the movie sets up some potential future plot points in the MCU, Kevin Feige has stated that there are no plans to make an Eternals 2 at this time. Other Marvel movies, such as Captain America: Brave New World, have since resolved some of the unfinished storylines; although, there’s been no word on if Harry Styles’ Starfox and Patton Oswalt’s Pip the Troll will ever be seen again.
Eternals is currently available to streaming on Disney+.
