The Little Things 4K Review: Denzel Washington Crime Movie Is Now in UHD
2021’s The Little Things is one of the many movies Warner Bros. put simultaneously on HBO Max during the pandemic. Featuring a stellar cast of Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto, the crime thriller proved divisive upon release. While it was previously out on Blu-ray, a belated The Little Things 4K release has finally arrived.
“Kern County Deputy Sheriff Joe Deke Deacon (Washington) is sent to Los Angeles for what should have been a quick evidence-gathering assignment. Instead, he becomes embroiled in the search for a serial killer who is terrorizing the city. Leading the hunt, L.A. Sheriff Department Sergeant Jim Baxter (Malik), impressed with Deke’s cop instincts, unofficially engages his help. But as they track the killer, Baxter is unaware that the investigation is dredging up echoes of Deke’s past, uncovering disturbing secrets that could threaten more than his case,” says the official description.
John Lee Hancock’s crime thriller proved divisive upon release. I believe this is due to its downer ending, which is far from the general “caught the killer” satisfaction that most serial killer movies strive for. However, I found the movie all the more interesting upon a rewatch because of its initially unsatisfying conclusion. Washington and Leto give particularly strong performances, and this really dives into the psychology of detectives and the grey zones they often operate within.
As for the new transfer, The Little Things 4K looks fantastic. As a lot of the film takes place at night and during investigations, the increase in black levels and level of detail really helps the movie. There are no compression issues to be found here, and it supports Dolby Vision. The audio has also received an upgrade as it now has a Dolby Atmos track, which helps the film sound great.
The Little Things 4K comes with nearly 20 minutes of bonus features. There’s an eight-minute featurette titled “A Contrast in Styles,” which takes a look at the film’s production and focuses on the trio of actors. Meanwhile, there’s also a nice nine-minute video called “Four Shades of Blue,” which takes a look at four WB movies that featured Washington as a cop (Ricochet, Fallen, and Training Day being the others). New to the 4K release is the inclusion of the theatrical trailer.
The Little Things 4K Review: Final Verdict
While it’s not a must-own movie, The Little Things 4K release is a definite upgrade from the previous Blu-ray. It’s also an interesting movie to revisit — as I definitely have my own theory as to who committed the killings — and its downer ending is actually a benefit to it upon rewatch. Featuring strong performances by its leads, this crime thriller is worth giving another shot.
