The Office’s Rainn Wilson Spoke To James Gunn About Playing This Character in DCU

With James Gunn‘s revamped DCU set to expand extensively in the coming days, The Office’s Rainn Wilson has come out to forward his name for the role of Plastic Man. Wilson, who gained worldwide acclaim for portraying Dwight Schrute in the US version of The Office, pointed out in a recent discussion that he has already approached Gunn over the prospect of playing the stretchable superhero on the big screen.

Rainn Wilson expressed interest in playing DCU Plastic Man to James Gunn

During his recent appearance at Fan Expo Chicago, Rainn Wilson revealed that he has pitched the idea of bringing Plastic Man to the DCU setup to James Gunn (via Entertainment Weekly).

“I’ve hinted to James several times, like, ‘Hey man, you’ve got to do something with Plastic Man. He’s one of my favorite DC characters, and I loved him growing up,” Wilson noted.

First introduced in comic books in 1941, Plastic Man is a former criminal who goes by the name of Patrick “Eel” O’Brian in real life. After a heist at a chemical plant goes awry, O’Brian acquires powers to stretch his body as per his whims. He decides to use his superhuman abilities for good and subsequently dons the mantle of Plastic Man.

Talking about his love for the character, Wilson said, “He had a wicked sense of humor. The Plastic Man comics were very, very funny. That would be a fun one to unearth.”

While Wilson has made it clear that he wants to play Plastic Man in the DCU, he would still tune in to see a project centered around the quirky superhero even if Gunn casts someone else in the part. “I would be a fan even if I wasn’t in it. I would love to watch that… And play him,” the 59-year-old actor said.

Wilson already seems to be a fan of Gunn’s DC Universe. Talking about Superman, the Office alum remarked that he thoroughly enjoyed how Gunn handled Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor in the film, stating, “I thought that the LexCorp or LuthorCorp or whatever in the movie was great, how James created that as a big, monolithic, corporate entity. That was pretty cool.”
