Margot Robbie Talks Possible DCU Return as Harley Quinn

John Cena might have made the jump from the DCEU to the DC Universe as Peacemaker, but it is still unclear if his The Suicide Squad co-star Margot Robbie will follow suit.

What did Margot Robbie say about possibly returning as Harley Quinn in the DCU?

Robbie was one of the highlights of the DC Extended Universe, with her portrayal of Batman villain Harley Quinn winning over fans of the character. After making her debut in 2016’s Suicide Squad, she headlined her own spinoff, Birds of Prey, in 2020. She then returned as a co-lead in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, which was written and directed by James Gunn, who has since become the co-head of DC Studios.

While Gunn has already made some of the events and characters from The Suicide Squad and its spin-off, Peacemaker, canon in the DCU, Robbie’s Harley Quinn return remains up in the air. Speaking recently with Variety, Robbie revealed that she has “heard nothing” from DC about coming back as the fan-favorite antihero.

After being asked if she ever got sick of playing Harley, Robbie replied, “Never. You can’t get sick of Harley. I love her so deeply. I always had high hopes for her like Batman. A character that loves on long after I’ve had a go at it.” Despite seemingly wanting to return as Harley for the DCU, Robbie also admitted that she’d be fine with somebody else stepping into the role, stating, “I feel like I need to share Harley.”

Robbie’s comments come roughly a week after Gunn told Entertainment Weekly that it would “be revealed down the line” whether the actor would play Harley Quinn in the DCU. At the time of writing, the Batman corner of the DCU remains largely untapped, with Gunn busy fleshing out the Superman Saga. However, a Clayface spinoff movie is about to begin production, while a solo Batman movie titled The Brave and the Bold remains in development. However, the DCU’s Caped Crusader is not expected to be introduced until after Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II, which is set in a separate shared universe known as The Batman Epic Crime Saga.

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is scheduled to hit theaters on September 19, 2025.
