
Josh O’Connor Is an Art Thief in The Mastermind Trailer
Mubi has shared the official trailer for The Mastermind, an upcoming heist movie about an amateur art thief in the 1970s. Following its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, the movie is now slated to arrive in theaters on October 17, 2025.

Who is in The Mastermind trailer?
The video introduces Golden Globe winner Josh O’Connor as he portrays the role of JB Mooney, an art thief whose first heist gets derailed. The trailer also features Licorice Pizza’s Alana Haim as Terri Mooney, Past Lives’ John Magaro as Fred, The Night Of’s Bill Camp as Bill Mooney, Transparent’s Gaby Hoffmann as Maude, and American Splendor’s Hope Davis as Sarah Mooney. Additional cast members include Sterling Thompson, Jasper Thompson, Eli Gelb, Cole Doman, Javion Allen, Matthew Maher, Rhenzy Feliz, D.J. Stroud, and more.
“In a sedate corner of Massachusetts circa 1970, JB Mooney, an unemployed carpenter turned amateur art thief, plans his first big heist. When things go haywire, his life unravels,” reads the official synopsis.
The Mastermind is written and directed by Kelly Reichardt, who’s best known for her work on acclaimed dramas such as Night Moves, Certain Women, and First Cow. The movie is executive produced by Efe Cakarel, Zane Meyer, Jason Ropell, and Sam Tischler, with Neil Kopp, Vincent Savino, and Anish Savjani serving as producers. The creative team also includes cinematographer Christopher Blauvelt, production designer Anthony Gasparro, and composer Rob Mazurek, with Reichardt also serving as its editor.
