Margot Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean Movie Gets Disappointing Update
The Margot Robbie-led Pirates of the Caribbean movie has received a less-than-stellar update.
In 2020, it was announced that Barbie’s Robbie was attached to star in a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie written by Birds of Prey’s Christina Hodson. The project has had trouble getting off the ground, with there being some conflicting reports as to whether or not it will ever materialize.
What is the latest Pirates of the Caribbean update?
According to a recent report from Variety, the Pirates of the Caribbean property is “in active development” over at Disney; however, the project that’s being worked on is not the “last reported iteration involving Margot Robbie.”
Approximately two years after the project was first announced, Robbie told Vanity Fair in November 2022 that she didn’t think her Pirates of the Caribbean movie was happening anymore.
“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool,” she said. “But I guess they don’t want to do it.”
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer then said a month later, via Variety, that the project could happen at some point. Bruckheimer further clarified that there are two Pirates of the Caribbean movies that are being developed: one being the Robbie-led film, and the other being a soft reboot/Pirates of the Caribbean 6 that will feature both returning and new cast members.
As of now, no upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean projects have a release date, and no casting has been announced, meaning fans of the franchise will have to wait to see if Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, and Geoffrey Rush reprise their respective roles as Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann, and Captain Barbossa.
The first five movies, meanwhile, are all available to stream on Disney+.
