Moana Live-Action Remake Recasting Beloved Character’s Voice Actor
When the Moana live-action remake arrives, it’ll be without one of the original animated film’s most beloved voice actors in its cast.
Who is being re-cast in the Moana live-action remake?
In a recent interview with Gold Derby, actor Alan Tudyk revealed that he won’t be lending his voice to the role of Heihei, the fan-favorite rooster that appeared in the first Moana, for the live-action film.
“Heihei will be played by someone else,” Tudyk said. While he wouldn’t go into detail, he said that the role would be played by a female performer who has yet to be cast, and also joked about the casting. “Everybody calls Heihei a chicken, even though he’s a rooster, so it’s about time they got an actress to put a little more ‘chick’ in the chicken.”

Tudyk first played the role in Disney’s 2016 hit film, and would reprise the role in its 2024 sequel. As Tudyk noted, it’s unclear who will be playing the character in the upcoming movie. Alongside Dwayne Johnson, who is reprising his role as Maui, the film also stars Catherine Laga’aia as Moana, John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala.
The live-action Moana remake will be released in United States theaters on July 10, 2026, from Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film is directed by Thomas Kail from a script written by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller.
