Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean Return Gets Exciting Update

Rumors about Johnny Depp’s potential return to a Pirates of the Caribbean 6 continue to float around, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently adding fuel to the fire.

What’s the new Pirates of the Caribbean update?

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly recently, Bruckheimer said that he’s spoken to Depp and believes the Jack Sparrow star might be interested in returning for the sixth entry in the long-running Disney franchise.

“If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it,” Bruckheimer said. “It’s all about what’s on the page, as we all know.”

Bruckheimer’s comments come as a potential return to the franchise for Depp has been rumored about all year. Earlier this year, a report from The DisInsider noted that Depp was prepping his return to the franchise, with Disney planning to begin production on the film sooner rather than later.

Last year, Bruckheimer also commented on Depp’s status in the franchise. Although he said that Pirates of the Caribbean 6 would be a reboot of the franchise, he did say he would bring back Depp as Sparrow if he had the choice.

“It’s a reboot, but if it was up to me, he would be in it,” Bruckheimer told EW in 2024. “I love him. He’s a good friend. He’s an amazing artist, and he’s a unique look. He created Captain Jack. That was not on the page; that was him doing a little Pepé Le Pew and Keith Richards. That was his interpretation of Jack Sparrow.”

While we don’t know whether or not Depp will return, it remains unlikely that Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley — who played William Turner and Elizabeth Swann in the first three films, respectively — will. Late last year, Knightley was open about her desire to no longer work on film franchises after the tough process of making the Pirate films, and Bloom was recently indecisive on a return.

“Listen, it was a wild and fun experience so, you know, never say never. I have a lot of respect for that experience, and Jerry, and the whole thing,” Bloom said earlier this year. “But who knows? I mean, it’s sort of one of those things I really haven’t thought about it, really.”
