James Cameron Tests Titanic Theory, Says Jack ‘Might’ve Lived’
While fans continue to debate about the divisive yet impactful ending of Titanic, even 27 years after its release, director James Cameron has admitted that Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack Dawson could’ve survived the sinking of the iconic ship in his film.
After conducting a thorough, scientifically accurate reenactment of the final moments of the movie, the veteran filmmaker came to the conclusion that, if done right, both Jack and Kate Winslet’s Rose DeWitt Bukater could’ve made it out of the ordeal alive.
James Cameron admits both Jack and Rose could’ve survived in Titanic
In order to put all the discussions surrounding Jack’s fate in Titanic to bed, James Cameron arranged for a one-of-a-kind experiment during the 2023 filming of the National Geographic documentary Titanic: 25 Years Later with James Cameron. After three rounds of tests, each having a different set of prerequisites, the Avatar director noted that Jack may have survived the events of Titanic (via Todd Spence).
“We have done a scientific study to put this whole thing to rest and drive a stake through its heart once and for all. We have since done a thorough forensic analysis with a hypothermia expert who reproduced the raft from the movie,” Cameron told the Toronto Sun in an earlier interview.
In the first round, the stunt doubles embodying DiCaprio and Winslet’s characters tried to fit themselves aboard a floating door. While the duo did fit on the replica from the Titanic flick, Cameron noted that due to the duo being somewhat submerged in freezing water, both Jack and Rose wouldn’t have survived the accident in this case. A second iteration saw the two stunt doubles take plank positions on the door, with their lower halves still under water. Here, as per Cameron, Jack could’ve lasted for hours.
However, in a third round, which saw the stunt doubles reenact the exact adversities that Jack and Rose faced in the film, Cameron instructed the Rose re-enactor to give Jack her life jacket. “He’s stabilised. If we projected that out, he just might have made it until the lifeboat got there,” Cameron said, confirming that Jack could’ve survived the ending of Titanic.
Nevertheless, he reiterated that Jack’s death was essential to the theme of his movie, stating, “It’s like Romeo and Juliet. It’s a movie about love and sacrifice and mortality. Love is measured by sacrifice.”
