Chris Hemsworth Explains Legacy of Thor Video Amidst Rumors of His MCU Exit

Chris Hemsworth has addressed the rumors of his Marvel exit as Thor. Hemsworth debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Thor, the 2011 superhero feature, and became a founding member of the franchise’s iteration of the Avengers. However, in May 2025, a video was shared through his official social media about Thor’s legacy, sparking rumors about his departure.

Chris Hemsworth says Legacy of Thor video ‘got misconstrued’

Hemsworth dispelled the rumors claiming that he is leaving the MCU during a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter. When asked about the Legacy of Thor video, its impact on fans, the speculations about his exit, and whether he was really saying goodbye to the character, Hemsworth laughed and responded, “It was certainly not the intent.”

The actor then offered details about how the video came to be. “To be honest, my social media team assembled some footage and were like, ‘Oh, this could be cool. We’ll put some stuff up and thank the fans.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, cool. It’s been great.’ So we penned it together, and off I went to do something else,” he explained.

However, Hemsworth and his team soon discovered that fans were wrongly interpreting the video. “But then I had a few people ask me about it, and someone on my team said, ‘Ugh, we’ve given the wrong impression here,’ the Extraction star elaborated.

Hemsworth told the outlet that they didn’t do any “damage control” because they didn’t think it was necessary, before accepting that “a lot was read into a little.” He proceeded to note he was already beginning “another chapter of this character” and that playing Thor “has been the biggest part” of his career. He added, “So [the video] was a moment of gratitude, and it wasn’t anything else. But it definitely got misconstrued and perceived in a different way.”

Hemsworth returns as Thor in Avengers: Doomsday, which debuts in U.S. theaters on December 18, 2026.
