Sofia Carson & Corey Mylchreest Talk My Oxford Year’s Rain Kiss, Coldplay Cover | Interview

My Oxford Year stars Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest spoke to ComingSoon about their new Netflix romance movie. The duo discussed their kiss in the rain, the film’s usage of poetry, and more. Directed by Iain Morris, the film is now streaming on Netflix.

“When Anna (Sofia Carson), an ambitious young American woman, sets out for Oxford University to fulfill a childhood dream, she has her life completely on track until she meets a charming and clever local (Corey Mylchreest) who profoundly alters both of their lives,” says the synopsis.

Tyler Treese: Sofia, poetry is used all throughout this film. I love this idea that our interpretations of art tell us not only about ourselves, but about others. What did you like most about how your character really experiences joy, but also uses that art to cope with the difficulties that life brings?

Sofia Carson: That’s a beautiful question, and I think one of the most beautiful parts of Anna and Jamie’s love story is precisely that.

I think we could begin with the quote that started it all, which is the rose to live deliberately. Anna believes that to live deliberately is to plan every single moment of her life, and that’s where she thinks joy exists, and planning every single moment, and in falling in love with Jamie and losing him, she learns that to live deliberately means just to be present and to suck the mirror out of every single moment.

Because, as I say, successive moments are really all that we have. I think that’s such a powerful realization to experience through a character and also as a human being. I think it gives us so much more joy in life to kind of let go and live freely in the moments that might be imperfect and messy, but just truly beautiful.

Corey, you couldn’t have better timing to have done a Coldplay cover and have the film release right now. Sofia’s obviously a talented singer, but your character was not. What’s your real singing talent like? Did you have to play it up here?

Sofia: That’s offensive because we thought you were singing well.

Corey Mylchreest: Yeah, yeah, yeah. The intention was… To be the best singer that ever did live.

Carson: I think you accomplished it.

Mylchreest: Thank you. Thank you. No, I am not a good singer, but I’m not that bad. I can sing. […] But I tell you what it is, no matter I really wanted on the day, because there’s about 80 extras there to go up to all of them and go, “By the way, guys, I’m gonna sing badly now. I’m doing it on purpose. So please don’t know.” […] Because really, there’s nothing that prepares you for singing that badly in front of people.

Carson: It’s very, very vulnerable and exposing. I enjoyed it so much.

Mylchreest: I know you did.

It’s a fantastic moment. So your embarrassment was worth it in the end.

Carson: Agree. It’s so beautiful.

Sofia, we see you in a Wonder Woman costume in this movie. You look great in it. DC obviously needs a new Wonder Woman. Is that just by coincidence, or are you putting your lasso in the ring for that role?

Sofia Carson: Oh, I’ve always been very vocal that I’ve loved, loved Wonder Woman. I loved Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. I’ve always said if there’s like a Wonder Girl or a daughter or a niece somewhere, that I would put my hat in the ring. But I’m also super game for Wonder Woman. I think she’s, yeah. As a woman, there’s —

Mylchreest: And as a wonder.

Carson: Oh! Aw. Thank you so much. I appreciate it.

Corey, my last question, I love a good romantic moment in the rain. You have a great one with Sofia in this film. How’s it actually filming it? Is it miserable?

Mylchreest: It’s not miserable.

Carson: That’s a good answer.

Mylchreest: It’s just quite cold. Because, you know, every scene takes about, I would say, on average, maybe three to four hours to film.

Carson: A couple hours, yeah.

Mylchreest: And so when you’re doing that very cold, you’re just gonna stay wet for like four hours and on a day that’s not so warm…. It’s not so nice.

Carson: The rain gets in your eyes, yeah.

Thanks to Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest for taking the time to talk about My Oxford Year.
