Fantastic Four’s Vanessa Kirby Is ‘Dying to Do’ This Evil Invisible Woman Variant in MCU
Vanessa Kirby, who plays Sue Storm / Invisible Woman in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, recently disclosed the specific evil iteration of her character she is “dying to do” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sue is one of the most powerful characters in Marvel Comics, and the darker elements of her character and powers have been considerably explored in that medium.
Vanessa Kirby says the Malice part of Sue Storm ‘needs to come out’ in MCU
Kirby stated in multiple interviews that she wants to play Malice after First Steps. During an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Kirby was asked what version of Sue she would be interested in portraying. The actor responded, “Oh, it’s Malice, definitely Malice. I just love that that’s a part of her. It just makes me so happy.”
Reflecting on the “accident” that turned Sue and her family into superheroes and their subsequent actions, Kirby mentioned a deleted scene between her and Paul Walter Hauser’s Harvey Elder / Mole Man. In this scene, Sue apparently threatens to give Harvey an “aneurysm in a second.” Kirby revealed that this part was “useful” to her as an actor because it underscored a real aspect of her character.
According to Kirby, she always loved Malice “because it’s almost like a part of her [Sue] that needs to come out, to be expressed, that, while she is committed to being altruistic and being a leader and doing good in the world, she also has a shadow side, like we all do.”
Notably, in the comics, Malice is Sue’s malevolent version that the supervillain Psycho-Man awakens during an extremely tumultuous period in the former’s life.
Kirby reiterated her hopes of portraying Malice in the MCU during a conversation with Variety, saying, “I’m dying to do Malice.” She reflected on her character’s tragic past and spoke about the deleted scene with Hauser. Kirby then said, “There’s something about meeting the hardest parts of yourself in Malice that felt extremely poignant to me. I’m really hopeful I might be allowed to be Malice at some point for her.”
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is currently in theaters.
