Beetlejuice 3 Update Is Bad News for Tim Burton Fans
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice director Tim Burton and lead star Jenna Ortega have finally shared their reaction to the previous report about the development of Beetlejuice 3. The theatrical run of the 2024 sequel garnered positive reviews from critics and fans, and currently holds a Certified Fresh rating of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 367 reviews.
What did Tim Burton say about Beetlejuice 3?
Last April, when asked if Warner Bros. is planning to make another Beetlejuice movie, producer Michael De Luca revealed that development on the third installment to Warner Bros.’ horror comedy franchise was imminent. However, it seems like Burton and Ortega weren’t informed about the studio’s potential plans for the Beetlejuice franchise.
In a new interview with THR, Burton and Ortega have both denied the possibility of returning for a Beetlejuice 3 movie. Even though Burton had enjoyed working on the sequel, the visionary filmmaker admitted that he doesn’t really see the appeal of doing a threequel.
“It took 35 years to make the second one, so by that time I’ll be 105. I know those odds are not good,” he said. “I really, really enjoyed making this one, and [Warner Bros.] didn’t even really want to do it. We did it the same way I did the first one, with the actors doing improv. It was beautiful to see some of the old cast and have Jenna. But it’s like trying to re-create the Wednesday dance scene. I love the characters, but I don’t necessarily see it.”
When asked how he would feel if the studio decides to do the project with another filmmaker, Burton revealed that he would be disappointed even if he doesn’t own the rights to the Beetlejuice franchise.
Burton added, “I feel very proprietary about everything I do, even if I don’t own the characters. When they did the [Beetlejuice Broadway musical], I got pissed.”
Meanwhile, Ortega isn’t willing to reprise her role as Astrid without Burton, who’s also working with her on the popular Netflix series Wednesday.
“I would never. I also think anybody would be really wrong to get behind that project,” she said. “Without him involved, what is it? It is what it is because of Tim. There’s no other film you can compare Beetlejuice to. So why would you do that? That would be a tad disrespectful.”
