Matt Shakman explains Galactus’ MCU debut in The Fantastic Four: First Steps
In a recent interview, the Emmy-nominated director described his motivations for setting up Galactus, played by Ralph Ineson, as the primary antagonist of The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Matt Shakman disclosed to Deadline that it was the clash between the world-conquering being and Franklin Richards, the son of Reed Richards and Sue Storm, that prompted him to choose Galactus as the big bad for his forthcoming film.
“Galactus is one of the iconic villains of the Fantastic Four and of Marvel in general. He’s literally the biggest thing in the universe, you know. This 1000-foot-tall cosmic vampire,” Shakman noted before explaining why he chose Galactus to be in the Fantastic Four movie. He explained, “I love this notion of the biggest, oldest thing in the universe coming into conflict with the tiniest, most innocent, newest thing in the universe, which is a baby, which is Franklin. So it was that idea…that was the original notion of why Galactus.”
Meanwhile, a recent clip of the film released by Marvel Studios showcased an encounter between the Fantastic Four and Galactus, where the latter demanded Franklin as a bargaining chip to call off his attack on Earth. While many have theorized that the cosmic being may want Reed and Sue’s child due to his reality-bending powers, his actual motivations should come to light following the release of the film.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is currently on track to premiere in theaters on July 25, 2025.
