Eddington’s Ari Aster Reveals Marvel Movie He Was Approached to Direct

Before Daniel Espinosa was tapped to direct Morbius, Sony shot for the stars by trying to snag a major arthouse filmmaker whose credits include the horror hits Hereditary and Midsommar.

What Marvel movie was Ari Aster offered?

While speaking on the Mixed Signals podcast, filmmaker Ari Aster confirmed a rumor that he had been approached to direct a Marvel movie, saying, “Yes, once.” Aster was initially hesitant to reveal which movie in particular he had been asked to helm, but eventually relented. “Well, I don’t know. I feel like I shouldn’t say. Should I? I was asked to do… Is it Mobius? Morbius? Morbius,” he revealed.

After stating that Aster’s version would have been awesome, Mixed Signals host Max Tani noted that the filmmaker likely dodged a bullet with Morbius, as it ultimately went on to be a massive flop for Sony. This prompted Aster to joke that he “could have added it to my list [of flops],” which, in the director’s defense, so far counts just his 2023 movie, Beau Is Afraid.

Check out the entire conversation between Mixed Signals and Aster, with the Morbius discussion starting at the 37:57 mark, below:

Released in 2022 as the third installment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, Morbius stars Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist suffering from a rare blood disease who transforms into a living vampire after he attempts to cure himself. The movie severely underperformed at the box office, grossing just $167.5 million worldwide off an $83 million budget. Critical reception was also largely negative. On Rotten Tomatoes, Morbius is labeled “rotten” with a 15% approval rating.

Sony initially had major plans for Morbius in its SSU, with the movie’s post-credits scene suggesting a future team-up movie with Michael Keaton’s Vulture. However, after Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter also bombed at the box office, Sony pressed pause on the SSU, shifting its focus instead to the upcoming Prime Video series Spider-Noir starring Nicolas Cage.

Morbius is currently available to stream on Disney+ and HBO Max.
