Superman’s India Release Was Censored & These Surprising Scenes Were Cut
A new report has revealed a key censored scene in James Gunn’s Superman for its Indian release. Just before the film’s theatrical debut, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) ordered the removal of a 33-second scene due to content-related concerns.
Why Superman’s India release got censored
The CBFC approved James Gunn’s Superman for theatrical release in India on July 7, 2025, with a U/A 13+ certificate. However, the CBFC ordered the removal of 41 seconds of footage, including a 33-second “sensual visual” spread across two scenes and an eight-second shot showing a “foul gesture,” replaced by a two-second alternate shot.
A trade source told Bollywood Hungama, “At the premiere held on July 9, the attendees didn’t react well to the cut. One can feel that something has been deleted. They were also confused why a part of the kissing scene was retained while the other part was censored.”
The censored content in Superman reportedly involved two kissing scenes between Clark Kent and Lois Lane, one in her apartment and another during a mid-air moment following the final battle.
The CBFC also directed the studio to delete certain foul words, in line with recent censorship decisions affecting Hollywood films in India. The certificate lists the final runtime as 130.44 minutes (2 hours, 10 minutes, and 44 seconds) after all mandated deletions.
In the film, David Corenswet plays Clark Kent, while Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult star as Lois Lane and Lex Luthor, respectively. Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and Milly Alcock take on the roles of Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Supergirl, respectively.
In similar cases, the CBFC muted five reportedly abusive terms in Marvel’s Thunderbolts. It also ordered the removal of allegedly obscene language from Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. A source told Bollywood Hungama that studios sometimes “anticipate” these cuts and choose to “self-censor.” For example, F1: The Movie replaced a middle finger emoji with a fist bump. The studio also modified Mickey 17 before submission.
Superman released in India and globally on July 11, 2025.
