Donkey Kong Movie Confirmed in Development at Universal
A Donkey Kong movie appears to be in development at Universal Pictures.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released in 2023 by Universal, Nintendo, and Illumination. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the film, which is based on Nintendo’s popular Mario video game franchise, was a huge hit at the box office, as it made approximately $1.36 billion worldwide.
What do we know about the Donkey Kong movie?
An official copyright document from Nintendo and Universal Pictures has now been filed regarding an “untitled Donkey Kong project.” The filing mentions that it will be a “motion picture,” though no further details than that are available at this time.
Check out a screenshot of the copyright filing below:
Seth Rogen voiced Donkey Kong in the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, while Fred Armisen voiced Cranky Kong. There’s been no official confirmation regarding whether the two of them will reprise their roles in this new Donkey Kong movie; however, it seems likely that they will given that The Super Mario Bros. Movie was such a hit and opens itself up to starting a new franchise.
It is known that a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie is in the works and is currently dated for April 3, 2026. No further details about that project are available at this time, other than that Jelenic and Matthew Fogel will return as co-director and screenwriter, respectively.
The synopsis for the 2023 movie reads, “While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers and brothers Mario and Luigi are transported through a mysterious pipe to a magical new world. But when the siblings are separated, an epic adventure begins.”
It’s also unclear if any of the other voice cast from that film — including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Jack Black as Bowser — will be part of this new, still untitled Donkey Kong movie.
