An Easter egg in the new Superman movie has confirmed the existence of both the Flash and the JSA in James Gunn’s DCU. Superman Easter egg reveals Jay Garrick’s Flash and other heroes
The release of Superman confirmed that the Flash, along with other members of the Justice Society of America, also known as the JSA, exist in James Gunn’s DCU. This confirmation is provided through a mural shown in the Hall of Justice.
In the movie, Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane (played by Rachel Brosnahan) is hunting for the truth behind Superman’s disappearance. This is when she visits the headquarters of the Justice Gang, aka the Hall of Justice, in Metropolis. Lane approaches the Justice Gang, consisting of Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Mr Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), to help her find Superman.
As their conversation continues, the mural comes into sight, showcasing the JSA, the first superhero team of DC. In the mural on the inner walls of the Hall of Justice, fans can spot Jay Garrick’s Flash, the original Sandman, Wesley Dodds, and many more. The JSA’s first appearance was in All-Star Comics #3, which was published in 1940. They went on to operate as the first team of metahumans. The members of the JSA include Green Lantern, Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Hourman, the Spectre, Atom, and the Flash.
Gunn’s Superman teases that metahumans have existed for three centuries in the rebooted DCU. While speaking about the Easter eggs at an event in London before the release of the movie, Gunn said, “There’s an iconic scene with a huge, huge mural in the background that tells you the story of metahumans in the DCU and that’s going to be really, really fun when we release those images to the public. So the stuff goes deep, it’s really, really fun, and it was really fun creating the world.”
