Rian Johnson on if His Star Wars Trilogy Is Still Happening at Lucasfilm

The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson has commented about the Star Wars trilogy that he was supposed to make — and still potentially could — for Lucasfilm.

Johnson previously directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which was released in 2017 by Lucasfilm. About a month prior to that movie’s release, it was announced that Johnson would also write a new trilogy of Star Wars movies that would be separate from the main story arc featured in previous films of the franchise.

Johnson was also supposed to direct the first movie in the trilogy; however, following the release of The Last Jedi and all the online discourse and controversy that surrounded it, the director went on to make 2019’s Knives Out and 2022’s Glass Onion. He’s now got a third Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man, that will arrive on Netflix later this year.

Given that it’s been several years since the Star Wars trilogy was announced and there’s been little news about the project since then, many have wondered if Johnson’s other Star Wars outings are still happening.

What did Rian Johnson say about his Star Wars trilogy?

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Johnson said that “nothing really happened” with the talks about the trilogy.

“[Lucasfilm and I] had a great time working together, and they said, ‘Let’s keep doing it.’ I said, ‘Great!’ I would kick ideas around with Kathy,” he commented. “The short version is Knives Out happened. I went off and made Knives Out, and was off to the races, busy making murder mysteries. It’s the sort of thing if, down the line, there’s an opportunity to do it, or do something else in Star Wars, I would be thrilled. But right now I’m just doing my own stuff, and pretty happy.”

While it doesn’t sound like any announcements about Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy moving forward will be happening in the near future, fans of his work can check out Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery when it arrives on December 12, 2025.
