Superman Box Office Flies in With 3rd Best Domestic Debut for 2025

Superman has officially outpaced Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel at the domestic box office. Directed by James Gunn, the reboot earned more in its first weekend than the 2013 film, marking a strong start for DC Studios. The early success sets the stage for the franchise’s next chapter under Gunn’s direction.

How Superman’s box office performed against Man of Steel’s opening

Superman debuted with a domestic opening of $122 million, ranking as the third-biggest opening weekend of 2025 and surpassing the $116.6 million debut of Man of Steel in 2013. Only two other movies had bigger opening weekends — A Minecraft Movie ($162.7 million) and Lilo & Stitch ($146 million).

According to Box Office Mojo, Superman’s domestic gross currently accounts for 56.2% of its worldwide total, with the film reaching $217 million globally after its first weekend.

Internationally, the film earned $95 million across all markets. Warner Bros. distributed the film, which runs 2 hours and 9 minutes and holds a PG-13 rating. The movie’s worldwide box office includes revenue from both domestic and overseas territories through its July 11–13 rollout.

Compared to its predecessor, 2013’s Man of Steel, Superman surpassed the earlier film’s domestic opening of $116.6 million. However, Man of Steel reached a total global gross of $670.1 million during its theatrical run, with international receipts making up 56.6% of that figure.

Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The plot centers on Clark reconciling his Kryptonian origins with his life as a human journalist, while navigating public skepticism and Lex Luthor’s agenda. The film was produced by James Gunn and Peter Safran under DC Studios, Troll Court Entertainment, and The Safran Company.

Rotten Tomatoes reports a critic score of 83% from 355 reviews and a 93% verified audience score based on over 10,000 ratings. The film’s theatrical release began in select international markets before expanding widely in the U.S. on July 11.

As of its opening weekend, Superman holds the third-best domestic debut of 2025 and outpaces the domestic launch of Man of Steel by over $5 million.
