Why James Gunn Didn’t Feel Guilty About Leaving Marvel for DC
Superman director James Gunn recently shared whether he felt guilty about leaving Marvel to work with DC. Gunn worked with Marvel Studios on the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise before joining DC Studios as co-CEO in 2022. Before joining as co-CEO, Gunn directed The Suicide Squad (2021) for DC after he was fired from Marvel before getting reinstated for GOTG 3.
Here’s why James Gunn didn’t have any ethical dilemma about leaving Marvel
James Gunn has revealed whether he felt guilty for working with DC after leaving Marvel in appearance on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast. Gunn was fired from Marvel Studios in July 2018, after which he was approached by DC to direct The Suicide Squad.
He recounted getting all the support from Marvel, saying, “They were completely supportive. [Marvel Studios Co-President] Louis D’Esposito called me all the time. Lou and Kevin were great. I didn’t feel guilt at all. I took a job [with] people that I also really liked, and that was it.”
Gunn also revealed how he was contacted by Toby Emmerich from Warner Bros. at the time. “He’s like, ‘James Gunn’s Superman?’ I said, ‘I don’t know, man.’ And then he was like, ‘Well, what about Suicide Squad?’ So I came up with an idea. I went and pitched it. They were like, ‘Yes, let’s do it.'”
However, soon after taking up the DC job, Gunn learned that he was reinstated for GOTG 3 from Kevin Feige. He said, “I went over to Kevin’s house. I went into his basement, where he’s got all his Star Wars figures like a little museum, and he said, ‘This is amazing.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, it’s good, but I have to do something else first.’”
He then broke the news of directing The Suicide Squad to Feige, who first thought that the director was working on Superman with DC.
