Seeing Fantastic Four in IMAX Makes New MCU Villain Even More Terrifying
Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman is hinting that the IMAX aspect ratio will change when Galactus appears in the MCU movie.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrives in United States theaters later this month. Produced by Kevin Feige, the Marvel movie stars Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Benn Grimm/The Thing, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer, and Ralph Ineson as Galactus.
What did Matt Shakman say about Fantastic Four in IMAX?
In a new featurette video teasing Fantastic Four’s IMAX release, Shakman said, “We designed the movie to be entirely in IMAX. You’re going to space, but also you’re in Manhattan, which is a vertical city, and we captured that scale. Then, you have the largest thing in the universe, and the world adjusts [makes hand gesture while video’s aspect ratio changes]. This movie celebrates the IMAX format.”

The official synopsis for the movie reads, “Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Marvel’s First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Joseph Quinn) and Ben Grimm/The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they face their most daunting challenge yet. Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). And if Galactus’ plan to devour the entire planet and everyone on it weren’t bad enough, it suddenly gets very personal.”
The cast of the movie also includes Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, Natasha Lyonne, and Sarah Niles.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits United States theaters and IMAX on July 25, 2025.
