James Gunn Reveals His Reaction to The Batman 2 Script

James Gunn revealed what he thought about Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin’s The Batman 2 script in a new interview. In late June 2025, Reeves announced through social media that the script for The Batman: Part II was finished.

The Batman came out in March 2022 and was a massive critical and commercial success, leading to the creation of a shared universe that Reeves and his collaborators called the Batman Epic Crime Saga.

James Gunn calls The Batman 2 script “great”

James Gunn was asked by Deadline on the red carpet for the Superman world premiere on Monday whether he had read Matt Reeves’ script and if Bat-Mite was in it. The filmmaker laughed about the Bat-Mite part of the question before giving his opinion on Reeves and Tomlin’s screenplay. “It’s great,” he said.

Bat-Mite is a relatively obscure character from DC Comics who is generally regarded as a nuisance and not a supervillain. He idolizes Batman and often visits him, setting up obstacles in his path to see him in action.

The success of The Batman spawned its own shared universe called the Batman Epic Crime Saga. When the DCU began, The Batman and associated projects became part of DC Elseworlds as they didn’t have any connection to the DCU shared universe. However, there have been speculations about the Batman from Reeves’ movies, portrayed by Robert Pattinson, potentially joining the DCU in the future.

At the time of this article’s composition, only one on-screen project besides The Batman has come out as part of the Batman Epic Crime Saga, and that’s The Penguin (2024). There was also a prequel comic book series, titled The Riddler: Year One, which debuted in 2022.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) in late June 2025, Reeves and Tomlin can be seen sitting together in the background with the script for The Batman: Part II in front of them. The Batman 2 is set to be released in US theaters on October 1, 2027.
