Superman’s David Corenswet on How Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel Is Different

David Corenswet, the new face of Superman in James Gunn’s upcoming DC reboot, recently opened up about how Zack Snyder’s portrayal of the character compares to Christopher Nolan’s vision of Batman. In a new interview, he reflected on past interpretations and the creative range within superhero storytelling. He also discussed the challenges of stepping into an iconic role with decades of cinematic legacy.

In an interview with GQ, David Corenswet said, “Just like Chris Nolan took Batman and did something darker and more grounded with the character, Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill explored a side of Superman that hadn’t been explored on the big screen.”

He acknowledged that different creative visions enrich a character’s legacy, stating, “With a great character like Superman, you want great artists and writers and actors to explore all of the possibilities of them.”

Corenswet previously told Entertainment Weekly in 2019 that Superman was his dream role. He also expressed interest in seeing a more “bright and optimistic” version of the character. Reflecting on that now, he told GQ, “I think that’s the least interesting thing I could have said. All I was saying was they’re doing it so well. Whenever they’re finished, I’d love to see the next one go the other way, and let’s see the other side.”

He emphasized the importance of varied interpretations, including films like Superman Returns, which he described as a “very strong film” with “so many great performances.” He also noted that public interest often shifts. “After Chris Nolan’s Batman films and after Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson, there are a lot of people who are like, ‘Where’s our funny, campy, fantastical Batman?’”

Corenswet’s remarks come ahead of James Gunn’s Superman, the first DCU Chapter One film, releasing on July 11, 2025.
