The Social Network 2 Gets Plot Details, Won’t Focus on Mark Zuckerberg

The Social Network 2 has received another major update, after more than a week since the project was officially confirmed. acclaimed filmmaker Aaron Sorkin will be returning to direct the sequel from a screenplay he also wrote. For his work on the 2010 biographical drama movie, Sorkin won his first Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. At the moment, the sequel has no official cast and release date yet.

What is the new plot details for The Social Network 2?

According to a new report, unlike the first installment, The Social Network Part II will not be focusing the story on Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg. Instead, the sequel will center around former Facebook product manager Frances Haugen, who became the Facebook whistleblower in 2021 after it was revealed that she was one who leaked the company’s internal documents that exposed the social media website’s role in the spread of misinformation, the proliferation of hate speech, and the declining mental health of teenagers.

Sorkin’s screenplay will reportedly be based on two Wall Street Journal articles including: “The Facebook Files”, which is a series of reports about the leaked internal documents from Facebook/Meta; and “The Facebook Whistleblower, Frances Haugen, Says She Wants to Fix the Company, Not Harm It”, which is a profile article about Haugen’s reasons for exposing the documents. After the articles were published, Haugen also testified before the United States Senate Commerce Committee, the Parliament of the United Kingdom, and the European Parliament.

The original 2010 movie centered around the creation of Facebook, and the complicated friendship between Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin. The ensemble cast included Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Armie Hammer, Max Minghella, Brenda Song, Rashida Jones, and Rooney Mara. It currently holds a Certified Fresh score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.
