Superman Could Work in R-Rated Projects, David Corenswet Hints at Return

Superman actor David Corenswet recently hinted that his version of the character could feature in the upcoming DC series Lanterns. Apart from this, he also expressed wishes for Superman to be part of R-rated projects in the new DC universe. Corenswet’s Superman film, directed by James Gunn, is coming to theaters on July 11, 2025.

David Corenswet wants Superman in an R-rated setting like Lanterns

The cast of Superman had a conversation with The Nerdist recently, where David Corenswet shared his thoughts about returning as Superman in future DC projects.

The actor mentioned his wish for Superman to appear in an R-rated project. He also dropped a big hint about a possible cameo appearance from the character. He said, “One thing that excites me so much about James’ vision for the DCU is the different genres and tones that the movies can take on. And I know people are skeptical that certain genres and characters can mix. I would love to see this Superman in an R-rated project.”

Although Corenswet didn’t confirm it, he name-dropped Lanterns as a project he would want Superman to feature in. He conveyed that he would be happy to see Superman “in a detective, you know, in a thing like Lanterns, where it’s a True Detective feel. I just think it can happen in spite of how bright and playful this version of the character is.”

Lanterns started filming at the beginning of 2025 and is speculated to arrive in 2026. It will star Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan. In February, James Gunn stated that Superman shares a connection with the Lanterns. While speaking to Screen Rant, Gunn revealed that Lanterns “is connected to Superman because we’ve got Guy Gardner in that, and then we’ve got these Green Lanterns over here.” He further added, “It’s just such a different tone from what Superman is.”
