Happy Gilmore 2’s Julie Bowen Thought She’d Be Replaced, Here’s Why

When Happy Gilmore 2 was being developed at Netflix, Julie Bowen did not expect to reprise her role in the sequel. Bowen, who played Adam Sandler’s love interest in Happy Gilmore, believed that her age disqualified her for the sequel.

“I didn’t think they’d bring me back at all,” Bowen said on a recent episode of the Inside of You podcast. “I mean, who am I supposed to be? He’s got to have a younger woman in this one, Happy Gilmore 2.”

In Happy Gilmore, Bowen played Virginia Venit, the head of public relations of the PGA Tour. Despite her initial hesitation toward Happy, she eventually falls in love with the unorthodox golfer.

When she initially auditioned for the role 30 years ago, Bowen also doubted that the casting directors would give her the role because she wasn’t the “hot girl.” Much to her dismay, the opposite happened.

“I read and they were relieved,” Bowen said about her Happy Gilmore audition. “They were visibly relieved. I go, ‘What’s going on?’ They’re like, ‘Yeah, some of these girls are just so aggressively sexy.’ And I was like, ‘That’s a bad thing?'”

In the sequel, Virginia and Happy started a family. Despite less screentime in the sequel, Bowen has been called the “heart of the movie” by Sandler.

Who is involved with Julie Bowen in Happy Gilmore 2?

Sandler and Bowen reprise their roles as Happy Gilmore and Virginia Venit for the sequel. Other actors from the 1996 movie returning in Happy Gilmore 2 include Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin and Ben Stiller as Hal L.

Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley, Benny Safdie, Sadie Sandler, Sunny Sandler, Blake Clark, Travis Kelce, and Eric André star.

Kyle Newacheck directs Happy Gilmore 2 from a screenplay by Sandler and Tim Herlihy. Sandler, Herlihy, Jack Giarraputo, and Robert Simonds will serve as producers.

Happy Gilmore 2 arrives on Netflix on July 25.
