The Old Guard 2 Reviews & Rotten Tomatoes Score Are Totally Opposite of First Film
The critical responses to The Old Guard 2 are coming in, and they paint a grim picture, leading to an extremely poor score on Rotten Tomatoes. The sequel subsequently went into production and eventually debuted on the platform on Wednesday, July 2.
The Old Guard 2’s reviews are largely negative,
The Old Guard 2 has received largely negative reviews from critics. According to Julian Roman of MovieWeb, while The Old Guard 2’s “slick” fight choreography and big-budget action are impressive, “all that eye candy” ultimately “struggles to overcome a poorly developed narrative and a surprisingly underwhelming villain.”
AV Club’s Caroline Siede called The Old Guard 2 a “relatively enjoyable watch,” especially for those who loved Charlize Theron’s Andromache “Andy” of Scythia and other characters in the first movie. However, Siede added that the fact that the sequel gives very little resolution to themes and arcs makes it “hard to recommend it as a standalone story.”
Benjamin Lee of The Guardian noted that even though the sequel’s 97-minute runtime (without credits) should be regarded as a “boon” in an era of “increasingly bloated” projects, the movie appears to be in “a panicked rush to wrap things up,” and is “poorly developed and confusingly plotted, a swift and savage franchise-killer.”
As per Kevin Maher of The Times (UK), The Old Guard 2 has several “movie-killing problems,” ranging from “horrible lighting” to “terrible echoey sound” to “rubbish fight choreography” to flawed storytelling.
How The Old Guard 2 Rotten Tomatoes score compares with first film
At the time of this article’s composition, The Old Guard 2 has an abysmal 28% approval rating on the review aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes after 40 reviews. For comparison, The Old Guard currently has an 80% approval rating on the same site after 286 reviews. The rating for the sequel will probably change as more reviews come in, but it’s unlikely to be enough to make the critical consensus positive.
The Old Guard 2 is available for streaming on Netflix.
