The Fantastic Four: First Steps Gets Rated Exactly Like Superman

The upcoming MCU superhero feature, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, has received its Motion Picture Association (MPA) rating, and it’s not the same one that Deadpool & Wolverine got before its release. Notably, the latter project, released in the U.S. on July 26, 2024, received an R-rating.

Marvel’s Fantastic Four movie officially rated PG-13

The MPA has given The Fantastic Four: First Steps a PG-13 rating. This will likely come as no surprise to many, as all of the MCU projects in the previous 17 years, except the aforementioned Deadpool & Wolverine, received the same rating from the organization. Incidentally, Superman, the James Gunn feature slated to serve as the first cinematic entry in the DCU, has also received a PG-13 rating. The two movies come out two weeks apart from each other.

The PG-13 rating is given to those projects with which parents are “urged to be cautious” as “some material may be inappropriate for pre-teenagers.” (via FilmRatings.com)

The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be the first project in the MCU’s Sixth Phase, and a lot is riding on its success. The performances of the previous live-action cinematic adaptations of the Fantastic Four comic book series were less than ideal. Marvel Studios took its time in developing the upcoming movie and likely has long-term plans with the eponymous superhero family, making it extremely important that the movie is a box office success.

It’s safe to presume that the studio is aware that a considerable portion of the MCU audience is young people, and the PG-13 rating will help the movie reach a massive section of it.

Matt Shakman directed The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which is the 37th big-screen entry in the MCU. The cast includes Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm / Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm / The Thing, and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm / Human Torch.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps premieres in U.S. theaters on July 25, 2025.
