The Old Guard 2 Director Explains Why Sequel Was Delayed

The Old Guard 2 director Victoria Mahoney recently opened up about the extended delay between the first and second films. In a new interview, the filmmaker discussed the challenges faced during production, including industry-wide shutdowns and development hurdles. Mahoney outlined the production delays behind the five-year gap. She also described how she expanded the story and visuals in the sequel.

Victoria Mahoney says The Old Guard 2 took so long due to 2023 strikes

In an interview with The Direct, Victoria Mahoney addressed the lengthy delay. She explained that the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes in Hollywood delayed the film. “We got caught up-A lot of us got caught up in the strike and it was, to some degree, one year for many of us. It’s 18 months to some other people in the industry,” she explained.

Mahoney also cited development delays, saying the five-year period included “the time it took to write it, the time it took to get the script approved.” Mahoney elaborated that various production logistics further slowed progress. “There were a number of reasons that we just got—and also, you know, the five years, the time it took to write it, the time it took to get the script approved, there’s so many other things that occurred in practical terms of what has to happen to get a movie up and running and then out to audiences.”

On the evolution of the franchise, Mahoney said, “What I hope we did [was] take all the wonderful nuggets…[and] expand and grow them.” She emphasized her focus on “elevating material” as a reason for joining the project: “The point of me taking a job is that I believe my skill set, my subjective life experience, is equipped to help elevate that material.”

Mahoney stated that she will not return for a potential third installment and has not participated in any related discussions.

Netflix has not officially announced The Old Guard 3.
