Charlize Theron Reveals ‘Scumbag’ Director Sexually Harassed Her

Bombshell and The Old Guard 2 star Charlize Theron is speaking out about the sexual harassment she experienced from a male director.

The award-winning actress first revealed the incident during her appearance on The Howard Stern Show in 2019, revealing that she was invited to a director’s home for what was supposed to be an audition for a movie — but the director instead made sexual advances toward her.

Theron sat down with Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast during her press tour for Netflix’s The Old Guard 2. When asked about the incident during her early auditions, the actress recalled: “I didn’t know what the audition process looked like — so naively, I didn’t know how you went about being an actor. [My agency] said, ‘We think there’s a casting for this movie and you’ll have to go on Saturday night,’ and they gave me the address and it was this director’s house.”

She continued, “The little voice inside me definitely said, ‘This isn’t right.’ But then, the other voice in me says, ‘Well, I don’t know. Maybe it is right.’ But that voice that we don’t listen to, that voice knew.”

Why did Charlize Theron choose not to mention the director’s name?

Theron never disclosed the director’s name, although she noted that he became uneasy when she began going public about what happened that night. Theron also revealed that the director wrote her “a pretend letter” in an attempt to take control of the narrative.

“I’ve never said his name because, honestly, I don’t want the story to be about him. It’s not because I’m protecting him or anything, but he got nervous for a little bit because he heard me tell the story and he knew it was about him and he wrote me a pretend letter trying to explain his behavior and how I must have misunderstood it, which is classic, isn’t it? It’s so classic,” said Theron.

The actress said that the director “panicked” about her statements and confirmed that he was a “huge director. “I won’t even fucking say your name because you know you’re the scumbag. You know it’s you. If anybody ever asked me about him, I would be completely honest — and he knows that. I kind of like that he’s got to be on a hot seat. He doesn’t know when it’s going to come. I kind of like that a little more.”

She added, “I was never going to get a part that night. And I knew that as soon as I left. I knew I wasn’t there because I had some value that I was going to bring to this man’s movie. I was there for one thing. I was only valued for one thing.”

Theron made a name for herself in the industry for her starring roles in Monster, Battle in Seattle, The Italian Job, Æon Flux, Hancock, Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde, and The Old Guard, among others.

She can recently be seen The Old Guard 2.
