Netflix has finally announced the Steve release date for its newest drama movie starring Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy and Titans’ Jay Lycurgo. It is based on Max Porter’s 2023 novella titled Shy.
Besides leading the cast of Steve, Murphy is also expected to reprise his iconic role as Thomas Shelby in Netflix’s upcoming Peaky Blinders movie, The Immortal Man, which will take place during World War II. Prior to this, he played Thomas Shelby for six seasons from 2013 to 2022. The acclaimed actor will next be seen in Nia DaCosta’s 2026 horror movie 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
When is the Steve release date?
The Steve release date has been announced as October 3, 2025. It will stream exclusively on Netflix at that time. The film will also receive a brief, limited release in theaters in September.

“Set in the mid-90s, Steve is a reimagining of Max Porter’s Sunday Times bestseller Shy. The film follows a pivotal day in the life of headteacher Steve and his students at a last-chance reform school amidst a world that has forsaken them,” reads the official synopsis. “As Steve fights to protect the school’s integrity and impending closure, we witness him grappling with his own mental health. In parallel to Steve’s struggles, we meet Shy, a troubled teen caught between his past and what lies ahead as he tries to reconcile his inner fragility with his impulse for self-destruction and violence.”
Tracey Ullman (Mrs. America, The Tracey Ullman Show), Simbi Ajikawo (Top Boy), and Emily Watson (Breaking the Waves, Small Things Like These) join the supporting cast alongside Douggie McMeekin, Youssef Kerkour, Luke Ayres, Joshua J Parker, Araloyin Oshunremi, Tut Nyuot, Tom Moya, Ahmed Ismail, Joshua Barry, Archie Fisher, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Priyanga Burford, George Fouracres, Marcus Garvey, Ruby Ashbourne-Serkis, and Roger Allam.
Steve is directed by Tim Mielants from a screenplay written by Max Porter, with Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow providing the music. The film is produced by Murphy, Alan Moloney, and Tina Pawlik, with Max Porter also serving as an executive producer. The creative team also includes cinematographer Robrecht Heyvaert and editor Danielle Palmer.
