M3GAN 2.0 Director on if 3.0 Is Next After Sequel

M3GAN 2.0 director Gerard Johnstone has addressed the future of the M3GAN franchise, explaining why he’s not ready to pitch M3GAN 3.0 just yet. He further shared his perspective on how the franchise could evolve with or without him.

Gerard Johnstone, the writer-director of M3GAN 2.0, confirmed he has no immediate plans to pitch M3GAN 3.0. “No, I couldn’t, and the reason is because I just put every single idea I had into M3GAN 2.0,” Johnstone told The Hollywood Reporter.

However, he acknowledged the franchise’s potential longevity. “I would not be surprised if there’s another five of these movies. So, who knows, maybe I’ll come back for the fifth one,” he added.

Johnstone also discussed the sequel’s AI themes. He noted how the emergence of ChatGPT and rising AI discourse during the original film’s release made the follow-up especially relevant. “So it just made the idea of doing a sequel so much more relevant because AI itself is everywhere,” he said.

M3GAN 2.0 centers on a new military-grade android named AMELIA, built using M3GAN’s leaked source code. AMELIA defies government orders and goes rogue. This forces Gemma (Allison Williams) to resurrect M3GAN as the only defense against the new threat.

Although some compared M3GAN 2.0 to Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Johnstone clarified that those similarities were unintentional. “The comparisons started after the script was written,” he explained. “But I was really just focused on a redemption arc for M3GAN.”

Johnstone credited the original film’s viral success to including M3GAN’s dance in the trailer. “Had Universal not included that dance, people would not have been able to take that footage and recut it to make M3GAN the cultural icon that she ended up becoming,” he stated.

M3GAN 2.0 releases in theaters on June 27, 2025.
