Kevin Spacey Netflix Movie Gore Won’t Ever Be Released — Report
Producer Andy Paterson recently petitioned Netflix to release or find a new home for its canceled Gore Vidal movie starring Kevin Spacey, which he says the company vows never to do.
What do we know about Kevin Spacey’s Gore Vidal movie?
Back in 2017, it was announced that Spacey would be joining a film titled Gore, where he’d play Gore Vidal, a writer known his wit and novels examining the social and sexual norms of America. The movie was based on the biography Empire of Self by Jay Parini, and was promptly canceled by the streaming company following several accusations of sexual misconduct made against Spacey in 2017.
With nearly a full decade passed since the film’s cancellation, Paterson — who was a producer on the project — spoke to IndieWire, and said he’s repeatedly asked Netflix to do something with the movie, to which he says they claim to never plan on doing.
“I have repeatedly asked Netflix either to show the film or to give me the opportunity to find a new life for it,” Paterson said. “They have said that they do not intend ever to release the Picture or sell it to a third party. I, and many others in the creative community, find this an extraordinary statement. The audience — including the Netflix subscribers who paid for the film — should be allowed to decide if they want to see it.”
Paterson went on to say that he doesn’t understand why Netflix continues to have seasons of House of Cards (which stars Spacey) or other Spacey-led films on the platform, but are so staunch with not releasing Gore.
“Netflix asserts its support for freedom of artistic expression yet it will not explain why this film should be buried when they still have the first five seasons of House of Cards and several Kevin Spacey films on their platform,” said Paterson. “Their current excuse for dismissing my request is that they took a tax write-off on the film, but that could easily be resolved. I repeat the request: if you won’t show the film, allow me to find another way for audiences to see a powerful and entertaining exploration of many of the issues that inform the debate around the intersection of sex, power and creativity.”
At this time, it seems like Gore will never be released, with Netflix instead choosing to keep the film vaulted and listed as a write-off for the company’s losses.
