Lewis Pullman’s The Void Looks Terrifying in Thunderbolts* Concept Art

An artist who has worked on Thunderbolts* shared terrifying alternative concept art designs of the Void. The movie debuted in U.S. theaters on May 2, 2025, and featured Lewis Pullman as Robert “Bob” Reynolds / Sentry / The Void, among others.

Alternate concept art for The Void from Thunderbolts* reveals comic-inspired look

MCU Studios’ senior illustrator John Staub shared concept art designs of Pullman’s Void from Thunderbolts* on Instagram. “Some explorations on The void for the film #thunderbolts aka #newavengers. We explored different possibilities that gave nods to the comic and tried to find the right look that was in line with the story that was being told,” Staub wrote in the caption.

In some of these new images, the Void is at the center of a swirling and dark, red and grey mass that seems to have taken the shape of an eye. One design shows the Void with glowing red energy tendrils on his chest.

Both in Marvel Comics and the MCU, Sentry / The Void is one of the most powerful entities to ever exist. In Thunderbolts*, Bob initially suffers from amnesia before learning the truth about himself. At one point in the movie, Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine describes the Sentry as “stronger than all of the Avengers rolled into one.” As the Void, Bob appears completely wrapped in shadows and near invincible. One of his abilities is that he can turn people into shadows after sending them to the nightmarish dimension he created.

Reflecting on his character, Pullman told Marvel.com in May 2025 that “it felt like it was Memento or something.” He later added that he needed to figure out the psychology and physicality of the various aspects of the character to portray them on screen correctly.

Notably, Staub has previously worked on other MCU projects such as 2018’s Black Panther, 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, and 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine.
