Why Jason Momoa’s Lobo Is So Crucial for Supergirl Movie

James Gunn explained why Jason Momoa’s Lobo is central to Supergirl and how the character drives the film’s story. In a new podcast appearance, Gunn explained how Supergirl adapts the comic’s episodic format into a single storyline. He also revealed that casting Momoa as Lobo brings both narrative weight and star power to the film.

Jason Momoa will portray Lobo in Supergirl, set for release on June 26, 2026. James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios and producer of the film, explained Lobo’s significance on the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast.

Gunn said, “The truth is that Woman of Tomorrow in the comics is very much… a bunch of little stories, and we needed to create one throughline, one three-act story, more traditional story. So Lobo helps us to do that.” He clarified that Lobo is not an amalgamation of other characters: “He’s a totally separate character. He’s himself.”

Gunn described Lobo as “maybe, in some ways, the biggest comic book character that’s never been in a film.” The filmmaker added, “I love Lobo. I always thought he was a great character to adapt.” Known as a ruthless bounty hunter from Czarnia, Lobo is a recurring antagonist in Supergirl’s comics, often clashing with Kryptonian heroes.

Supergirl, played by Milly Alcock, will go on a galaxy-spanning mission to avenge a death caused by Krem of the Yellow Hills, portrayed by Matthias Schoenaerts. Krem, a lesser-known character, and Schoenaerts, a respected actor but not a mainstream star, add limited commercial draw. Gunn’s casting of Jason Momoa could add star power and visibility to the project, helping to anchor the film within DC’s broader cinematic universe.

Supergirl is part of the DC Universe’s first chapter, Gods and Monsters, which launches with Superman on July 11, 2025. The film is directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, who is also scripting a Teen Titans movie. Alongside Alcock and Momoa, the cast includes David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Eve Ridley. DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran joins Gunn as producer.
