Elio & 28 Years Later’s Box Office Couldn’t Beat How to Train Your Dragon
With How to Train Your Dragon, 28 Years Later, and Elio leading the weekend box office, their performances have sparked significant discussion across the industry. While Dragon held the top spot in its second weekend, 28 Years Later delivered a strong debut for Sony’s horror revival. Meanwhile, Pixar’s Elio marked a historic low for the studio despite positive audience scores.
How to Train Your Dragon retains top spot against 28 Years Later and Elio’s box office
Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon remained No. 1 in its second weekend with $37 million, bringing its 10-day domestic total to $160.4 million. The animated sequel held 4,373 theaters and dropped 58% from its opening weekend. IMAX screens contributed $4 million or 11% of the weekend’s total. (via Deadline)
Sony’s 28 Years Later debuted in second place with $30 million from 3,444 theaters. The film opened with $14.1 million on Friday but experienced a 38% drop on Saturday to $8.8 million, followed by $7.05 million on Sunday. It earned a B CinemaScore and had a global opening of $60 million, matching its production cost.
28 Years Later had strong Thursday previews at $5.8 million. Audience exit polling showed a 54% definite recommend and a 3-star rating on PostTrak. Males over the age of 25 made up 52% of the audience.
Disney/Pixar’s Elio opened in third with $21 million from 3,750 theaters, marking the lowest domestic debut in Pixar history. The previous low was Toy Story ($29.1 million in 1995). Despite a strong A CinemaScore, marketing challenges and delayed release seemingly affected turnout.
Elio’s preview gross was $3 million. Its social media reach was 272.5 million, 30% below average for original animated films. AMC Dine-In Disney Springs in Orlando was its top-performing location with $62,000. Audience breakdown showed 39% under 12, and PostTrak revealed a 59% definite recommend rate.
The total weekend box office reached $126.5 million, down 18% from the same weekend last year. Lilo & Stitch added $9.7 million in its fifth weekend, bringing its total to $386.7 million. (via Box Office Mojo)
