Dragon’s Lair: The Muppets Director to Helm Ryan Reynolds’ Video Game Movie

Filmmaker James Bobin, who helmed Disney’s The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted, is being eyed to direct Ryan Reynolds-led cinematic adaptation of the video game series Dragon’s Lair for Netflix. The video game franchise debuted in 1983 with the self-titled game and has since expanded into multiple sequels and spin-offs, and spawned an animated TV show and a comic book miniseries.

James Bobin likely to direct Dragon’s Lair movie for Ryan Reynolds

Bobin is in consideration to direct Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Dragon’s Lair, as per The Hollywood Reporter. Conversations about the project have been around since 2020, when Netflix greenlit the adaptation after securing the rights to it. Besides acting in the adaptation, Reynolds will produce the project. Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment and Trevor Engelson of Underground will also produce the feature alongside Don Bluth, Gary Goldman, and others.

The first Dragon’s Lair was an arcade game that became immensely popular in the ’80s. At one point, it was the most popular game in the U.S. In the following years, sequels such as Dragon’s Lair II: Time Warp and Dragon’s Lair 3D: Return to the Lair came out. In late 1984, ABC aired a short-lived animated show based on the first game.

Reynolds discussed the Dragon’s Lair Netflix adaptation in November 2022 during an interview with Collider. He noted that Netflix had decided to tackle Dragon’s Lair “in a spirit of partnership that I’ve never really seen before.” Reynolds claimed that their approach to the project would surprise “a lot of people” due to its scope, adding that he was “curious” to see how it would turn out.

The Deadpool & Wolverine actor elaborated, “It really intersects in a unique way with technology that I’ve never been privy to in the entertainment industry. So they’re taking some kind of pretty innovative stabs at this particular IP in a way that I’m blown away with. And I’m excited that they’re as along for the ride as we are.”
