Toy Story 5 Gets New Plot Details as Woody & Buzz Argue Again

Pixar COO Pete Docter gave an exclusive look at Toy Story 5, the upcoming sequel to the long-running animated movie series.

What are the new Toy Story 5 details?

At a recent presentation in New York City, Docter shared more about the film’s premise, which will see the toys’ owner Bonnie getting older. She’s now eight years old and wants to be more socially connected, making friends in new ways.

She now has a Lily Pad, a new character that looks like a tablet with a frog case surrounding it. The Lily Pad can speak and has different views from the toys on how to be there for Bonnie, as the toys struggle with their purpose in a world turning more and more to electronics than toys. Their voice actor is currently unknown, but it was reported earlier this year that Anna Faris would have an undisclosed voice role in the film.

As conflicts arise, the toys enlist the help of their old friend Woody. But Woody and Buzz also have opposing views on how to help Bonnie. Mr. Potato Head remarks that he’s happy to finally see them bickering again.

Docter also screened the current opening scene of the film, which has a Buzz Lightyear action figure waking up on an island. He soon finds he is surrounded by dozens of Buzz Lightyear action figures in what appears to be the remains of a shipwreck. Marooned, these Buzz Lightyears look to the sky and see what they believe to be Star Command. They then journey into the unknown together. At D23, Pixar revealed the army of Buzz Lightyears would be the villains of the film.

Toy Story 5 will be directed by Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Wall-E) from a screenplay he wrote. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack will return to their longtime roles as Woody, Buzz, and Jessie. Tony Hale will reprise his role as Forky from Toy Story 4. Conan O’Brien will voice a new character named Smarty Pants. Ernie Hudson takes over the role of Combat Carl from Carl Weathers.

It is currently set to arrive in theaters on June 19, 2026.
